This piece of my passenger rear door handle broke off over the holiday sometime in the week after Christmas. I didn’t notice when because I don’t go to that side a lot. My nephew brought it to my attention at laser tag.
Yesterday I went to the dealer to show them and order a new part. He says it will be $60, but he’s not sure if it will have to be painted on top of that. The thing is that this is not a piece that pops off easily. It’s bolted in and had to be broken off. I never hit anything. I have no idea how this happened.
Also, saw this in the service bays. A Hyundai with KDM Kia badge. The service guy looked at me funny for taking a pic of it. There was a yellow stinger two bays over two.

That’s weird - tempted to say someone tried to break in the car, but a large rock would be better for that purpose.
Hopefully there was no other damage - doesn’t look like it?

Hmmm. I wonder if somebody whacked the crap out of it with the edge of their door?

maybe some one slammed their door into it? if that were the case youre luck they hit it and not the door.

Thanks for that. Now I can’t unsee it.

That’s the only thing that makes sense. If so, then I’m grateful that’s the only thing they hit. It’s a little part that won’t cost me a mint to fix. But then, it’s pretty bad to break someone’s car and run off.

No, fortunately not. Not even a scratch outside that.

It is, but people often suck.

I always worry about internal damage from prying it off.
The spare tire was stolen from under my Pathfinder a long time ago - they did such a hack job, it would have taken $1k to fix the spare tire carrier. I did not fix it...

Yeah, that must be it. If I had done such a thing, I’d have left a note.

It looks like the piece was snapped off at the bolt, and the door handle functions fine. I got lucky.

being the back door ti was probably some shithead kid who didn’t tell their parent.

You’re probably right.I wondered whether it might be one of our kids, but it doesn’t match up, and I couldn’t see guilt in their eyes.

yeah some kids aren’t trained to felt any guilt. My wife’s step sister banged the her door on so may things that the corner of both back doors were actually folded in a bit on my mother-in-law’s Golf. That kid is a prime ex ample of what happens when divorced parents both want to be the favorite parent.

if it’s a plastic piece, it’s possible the retaining hooks/tabs cracked on installation and finally let go. The little closeouts (beauty caps ) on the attachment points for the sun visors on the 2013-2016 Fusion were well known for doing that.
apparently it was easy for the plant to push those into place the “wrong” way, cracking that little retention hook. eventually the damn things would just fall out.

Ugh. Fortunately, my daughter and nephews are open books . They suck at lying, and I hope we can keep it that way.

I thought that might be it at first, but see that screw there? The U-shaped plastic behind it is where the piece broke off. So, I think it was screwed on and needed some real force to snap it.
